Search Engine Marketing is vital today. So we now need to look carefully at where the commercial market-place is going. Any service or product related company must have a website – that’s a given. But a web presence by itself won’t bring results. Purchasers won’t necessarily be able to find you.
Let’s compare it to a new store opening up… A lot of money has gone into setting it up. They open for business… And see where they are – in the middle of nowhere, down some side-alley. And no-one has given any thought to advertising their location. Is anyone likely to buy from them? This is exactly the scenario for 99% of ALL commercial websites in existence.
Marketing has undergone a huge change because of the internet. A decade or so ago, it was fashionable to jump on the website bandwagon. Complex graphical websites costing thousands (or tens of thousands) were regularly launched. Obviously, this new business was very welcome to web design companies. Then it became apparent that no-one was visiting these sites. There was a belief that if you built it, they would come. Sadly, this wasn’t true…
A traditional approach to marketing breaks down on the web. Off-line marketing people would suggest your website is like a sales brochure. Consequently they’ll recommend the time-honoured promotional methods of newspaper advertising and the media. Really just assuming websites need the same treatment as everything else! First they make a nice looking catalogue. Then they utilise various marketing methods to get people to look at the catalogue. Yet in the web economy, this approach is way off the mark!
The World Wide Web isn’t simply a passive display board. It’s a vast interactive tool for people all over the world. We can discover in-depth information, research products and services and chat with others before we buy. Basically, the only time you now paid was when someone who was already interested asked to look at your site. This is an incredibly targeted way of advertising, and done properly, can yield some exceptional results.
But Pay-Per-Click is heavily over-subscribed now in most sectors. Costs per click have been heavily driven up, mostly by inexperienced marketers bidding too highly. We’re now experiencing some costs per click that make profits unattainable. Especially where large volumes of clicks are required to make a sale. And so the alternative approach of optimising sites to organically move them up to the front page is now more interesting to many companies.
Have a go at this – Go to Google or Bing RIGHT NOW and type in a few product or service keywords. Can you see your website on the 1st three pages? It’s very doubtful. So you might as well not be there at all! If it is there, would clients really use those keywords?
You may have some successful experience of PPC advertising. Can you be sure you’re working it as efficiently as possible? Is your ROI satisfactory? Have you got an eye on the stats that measure your results? It’s important to split test your campaigns – are you doing this? If you don’t know what your stats are, then guaranteed you’re not getting the best results for your money.
It’s very evident today that both global and local commerce are moving swiftly onto the internet. Make the most of this trend. Unless you embrace the internet and utilize all of its advantages, your business will become a dinosaur.

Search Engine Optimisation Simplified

Search Engine Optimisation is an ever changing discipline. It works to maximise a website’s ratings on the ‘natural’ search lists on major Search Engines. The natural listings form the main body of a Search Engine’s pages. These do not include the paid listings. On the major Search Engines, you’ll see a box at the top, and a column down the right hand side. These are the paid adverts. Naturally listed adverts have been taken directly from the index. They show sites listed in the order of importance and relevance – according to their algorithm.
Naturally our target is the top of the first page! We’re unlikely to get noticed if we’re number 8 on the tenth page! We can’t know for sure about all the criteria Google and the like use to rank us. They keep it a closely guarded secret!
Because of this, much technical expertise has developed around the subject. On the one side you have SE’s like Google deliberately filing technology patents in many different areas. This makes determining their ratings methods more complex. Then to challenge that on the other hand is a growing SEO (optimisation) sector. Optimisation specialists test, quantify and evaluate a myriad of indicators that affect a site’s ratings.

SE ‘On Page’ Optimisation
On-Page SEO is all about changes you can make directly to a site to make it more Search Engine ‘friendly’. It involves ‘correctly’ configuring your website. For example: Internal-linking, using H1 & H2 header tags, seeding keywords at the correct density (and in appropriate places,) and to some lesser degree, using meta-tags.
Don’t worry if you don’t understand the technical terms. In reality, this is very easy to control, but not wildly effective. To be fair, it’s generally assumed now to have very little import indeed. Previously we could make an impact with On Page configurations. But that door has been completely closed down for several years now.
On-Page can still be important though if Off-Page has been taken care of. In that circumstance, some On-Page tweaks and internal links can have an impact.
A Few Handy Pointers… Don’t try hugely listed phrases and keywords in your early attempts at Search Engine Optimisation. For instance, if you typed into a Search Engine the term Car insurance, seventy million results would be listed for the UK alone. That’s a huge number to pitch yourself against.
But… When car insurance is prefixed with ‘Southampton’, it becomes a less intolerable three hundred thousand. (Only useful of course if these words describe my business.) This still seems quite a large amount, but it’s actually not in search terms.
The extended phrase makes all the difference. Trying to get a ranking for CAR INSURANCE would take a huge amount of time and money. My competition would be the huge corporations. Not the best way to do things at all!
In fact, what we really need are terms that more specifically reflect our product or service. They’re known as long tail searches, because they’ll have several keywords. Phrases can be as many as seven words, depending on your competition. Most are about 3 – 4 keywords.
We like to start Search Engine Optimisation using terms that yield less than 500K. However, if the websites at the top of the listings aren’t well optimised, we may stretch to a higher count. We’ll automatically move up the ratings for the more popular search terms as we gain more back-links. Assuming everything goes to plan, we’ll hit the popular phrases in three to twelve months. This is a nicely targeted approach. We’re looking for people who want to buy, so we use terms with a commercial intention!
Back Links should be shared between several web pages on your site and not just restricted to the Homepage. We call this ‘deep-linking’ – and Google in particular likes this. Try back-linking product group pages. They very frequently link up to a range of sub-pages, so driving appropriate terms to them can be very worthwhile. Thus – don’t restrict the back links to just one page. The managing and listing of individual sub-pages is receiving growing attention from the major Search Engines.
